Restaurateur Shane Osborn discusses how his team have supported each other during these tough times
3 MIN READ
Restaurateur Shane Osborn is the chef and mastermind behind Michelin-starred Arcane in Hong Kong and the more recently opened Cornerstone restaurant.  The past 18 months of social unrest and the unprecedented global pandemic have been a challenging time for Shane and his team, but keeping an open dialogue has been the key to supporting each other through hard times.

The  last 18 months have been no laughing matter for the guys and gals working in the food & beverage industry in Hong Kong. Shane and his team have been supporting Movember for the last three years and whatever the difficulties, they have some fun team time together, growing moustaches, committing to ‘move’ throughout the month, and encouraging their customers to donate to Team Arcane.

THERE’S NO SHAME IN ADMITTING YOU ARE ILL
“One of the reasons why I am so passionate about supporting Movember is that my father died way too young, as a victim of a cancer that went untreated as he was too stubborn and proud to admit he was ill,” explains Shane.  “By getting these topics out in the open, and by talking about both our physical and mental health issues, and even by having some fun around this through Movember, we hope to generate education and funds to increase awareness of common men’s issues.”

CARING FOR MENTAL WELLBEING IS CRUCIAL DURING TOUGH TIMES
Mental wellbeing is one area that has become more critical than ever, with many men feeling anxious as a result of the pandemic.  “The last year or so have been highly stressful, working in an industry which is reliant on tourism and the ‘feel good factor’.  The psychological effect on all of us has been devastating.

“We have found that the best way to support staff during these difficult times is simply through open and constant dialogue.  We are always checking in on each other.  In fact, talking is the most important thing any of us can do.  I can’t implore men enough, please don’t be afraid to discuss issues with friends and colleagues.  That one small act can have such big impact.”

HEALTHY LIVING IS A GAME CHANGER
Shane is a big believer in supporting a healthy lifestyle.  “For myself, I have found three positive habits that have really helped me through tough times.  1) Adopting a more healthy diet and eating more plant-based meals, 2) improving my sleep routine to ensure I get at least 6-7 hours a night and 3) regular exercise.  All of these have helped to stabilise my routine and frankly, keep me level-headed, in a rather unstable external environment!”

MO YOUR OWN WAY
Movember is encouraging Mo bros and sisters to get ‘moving for Movember’ in order to get more fit, raise funds, create awareness and simply have a good time together.  Challenge yourself and your friends to run/walk 60km to represent the 60 men that we lose to suicide every hour.   This year, the sky is the limit, and you can Mo your own way.  Choose-your-own-adventure challenge, epic in scope and scale. You make the rules and you set the limits. Take a hike, run a relay, walk the Dragon’s Back, follow the Five Peaks!

Shane concludes “This year, more than ever, life has proved that it really is one big adventure with untold surprises around the corner.  Let’s all give ourselves a break, take care of one another, check in regularly and share this roller coaster ride together!”
